Suu Kyi’s Rohingya Remarks Anger Bangladesh

The Bangladeshi government has slammed comments made by Burmese opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi last week, when she called clashes between Arakanese Buddhists and Rohingya Muslims in Arakan State an “international tragedy” and said that illegal crossing of the shared border with Bangladesh had to be stopped, “otherwise there will never be an end to the problem.” The Bangladeshi Foreign Ministry said in a statement that “There is… no reason to ascribe Bangladesh nationality to these people,” referring to the Rohingya, a stateless group rejected by both countries.
