RANGOON — A Burmese beauty queen who was stripped of her title for allegedly being rude and dishonest has run off with the US$100,000 jeweled crown, a South Korea-based pageant said Friday.

Burma, which only recently emerged from a half-century military rule and self-imposed isolation, started sending contestants to international beauty pageants for the first time in decades in 2012.

May Myat Noe was crowned Miss Asia Pacific World in Seoul in May 2014. But, according to David Kim, director of media for the Seoul-based pageant, the 18-year-old was a disappointment from the start.

Attempts to reach May Myat Noe for comment were unsuccessful Friday and her Burmese phone was switched off. According to the online edition of Eleven Media, a Burmese newspaper, she was back in the country and would address a news conference soon, although it wasn’t clear when.

Following her success, the organizers said they were arranging singing and video deals for her. But they also wanted to change the 5’ 7” teen’s looks, Kim said.

“We thought she should be more beautiful … so as soon as she arrived we sent her to the hospital to operate on her breasts,” he said.

“It’s our responsibility,” he said, adding that sponsors picked up the $10,000 tab, as they have for past winners. “If she has no good nose, then maybe, if she likes, we can operate on her nose. If it’s breasts, then breasts.”

Kim said that troubles started from there. The beauty queen brought her mother with her to Seoul for what was supposed to be a 10-day visit, but that quickly turned into three months, incurring extra cost to the organizers, he said.

She “lied” and “never had respect for the main organization, the national director, the manager, media or fans who made her the winner,” organizers said in a statement.

May Myat Noe was notified earlier this week that she would have to give up her title and the crown, Kim said. She was also given an airplane ticket back to Rangoon, but never showed up, with Eleven Media reporting that she got on an earlier flight.

Kim said she absconded with the bejeweled Swarovski tiara—valued anywhere between $100,000 and $200,000.

“Everyone knows she is no longer the queen, but she thinks as long as she keeps this crown she’s the winner,” he said. “She’s not.”

  1. It is really ashamed. I sometimes feel embarrassed to tell that I am from Myanmar when I go abroad. Some years ago, Myanmar national footballers were reported to steal things when they went oversea matches. And, when SEA was held in Singapore, Myanmar footballers were reported to be rude to the referees. Now again, the new beauty queen who has brought the country in the regional media spotlight (in good way) after long years of military rule. Embarrassingly enough, I am reading this news again!

I am not a racist. But It is a well-known fact (especially among ethnic minorities) in the country that ethnic Burmans are liars and dishonest. May Myat Noe just confirms this assumption again. Now, as it already happened, returning the crown honestly and gracefully without complaint and delay will be the best and only way to mitigate the damage caused to herself and the country.

  2. Koreans are good at dirty job. Myanmar people need to side with May Myat Noe who is under manipulative hands of Korea.

  3. Being a miss universe does not only depends on the size of the boobs why judges are too focusing on her boobs instead of other talents ? Though plastic surgery in Korea is not the big deal though.. Staying more than 3 months is not depend on the organizer but her visa status. I don’t think she is running away with that crown because there are many similar crowns we can get at Yangon Bo Gyoke Market. There must be some misunderstanding. There are also a lot of actors in the world who have done something more stupid than this.

  4. Why would anyone want to look like a stupid Korean girl with fake eyes, fake nose, fake boobs, what else is fake?
Give that silly crown back to the Koreans and just be a simple proud Burmese girl!

  5. The Judges in the Pageant chose her as the Winner of Miss Asia Pacific contest which was done publicly before an audience in attendance. In any event such as these, the Judges’ or Referee’s decision usually is final, and must be honoured. You can’t change the rules or nit-pick on rudeness AFTER the Pagent! What a lame explanation. I’d say she won the Title fair and square.

The Myanmar Government should lodge a protest with the South Korean Embassy in Yangon, as this is abuse of her human rights i.e. insisting she have a breast operation as a condition of the Pageant. Anyway, what has breast enhancement got to do with her singing potential? …. Furthermore, what has singing got to do with any Beauty Pageant?

B.T.W. I have viewed several YouTubes and Miss May Myat Noe sings in the Korean language – which melted the hearts of her audience. This girl has tried her best to please the organisers. Leave her alone.

  6. Who given this title stealing crown?

MAPW Organization announced the statement on 27 Aug 2014.

Does anyone knows when she arrived back Myanmar?

    When she agreed to returned?

  7. Mr. Kim you should shut up, be very careful and all South Korea should be very sensitive on this issue. To many times cheapest charlie S Korea business is try to set up min Myanmar the past 10 years, only Japan and other countries opened a gap to squeeze in for S Korean. Most time not a real business and the living house become a restaurant. fashion shows and others to often ended up already in the red light scene when arranged by S Koreans. In tourism it was the selling of Myanmar Girls aS at Chatrium and other Hotels in Yangon where the S Korean tour operator made his one or two $ US profit , that is all ill managed business Myanmar does not need.
A beauty Queen as S Korean standard which won 100.000 $ US award is to to be one as such and there no need to be bigger breasts or any other changes otherwise the whole contest was a bullshit already . I am not surprised that the Myint Shwe Government in Yangon let such a show a women insulting event happen at all….for these soldiers as Myint Swe this is just ” Karaoke “…..
Shame on South Korea if their Embassy and Ambassador stands for such business with Myanmar,— dragging Myanmar ladies only into upper class prostitution, good on the mother to take control again, save Myanmar Girls from South Korea twisted Business ….

  8. David Kim sure has secret and personal agenda. Fixing breast and so on is not his job. Because May Myat Noe is already beauty Queen. She does not need Korean surgeons anymore. What David Kim wants is to sleep with her.

  9. This organization definitely has ethical problems and should avoid competing for such pageant:
    1. In 2011, its first winner, Jung Eun A resigned the tile after allegations of “automatic top-ranking placements in exchange for sex” by organizers.
    2. British model Amy Willerton fled the competition after lack of food and alleged sexual harassment from organizers.
    3. The events were filmed in the video below by Willerton and other contestants.
(these contestants said “This pageant is a joke. They are sick, disgusting, just awful people whom should not be allowed to work with women around the world.)
