MANDALAY — Police are looking into the death of a motorbike taxi driver who was killed by a gunshot in Mandalay.
Taxi driver U Ye Win, 35, fell from his motorbike on Kyansittha Street between 71st and 72nd streets in Pyigyitagon Township around 8 a.m. on Wednesday. He was then rushed to Mandalay Hospital.
It appeared to be a road accident, but a post-mortem examination showed that he was hit by a bullet and killed on the spot, police have confirmed.
“His [the victim’s] father said his son had a motorbike accident. So, we initially opened the case as a road accident. But when we examined the wounds on his head, we found that a bullet had entered between his eyebrows. We reported this to the regional police force,” a traffic police officer on duty at Mandalay Hospital emergency unit told The Irrawaddy.
A police officer from Mandalay regional police force also confirmed that the motorbike taxi driver died from a gunshot.
“We are still investigating if he was shot deliberately. We will issue a press release as soon as we receive accurate information,” the police officer told The Irrawaddy.
