The Eleven Media Group has applied for licenses to open Burma’s first privately owned television news station and daily newspaper, according to a report by Mizzima. Than Htut Aung, the company’s CEO and chairman, said he hopes to begin publication of a daily newspaper even before a new media law is approved, which could be as soon as this month. Although Burma has numerous privately owned weekly news journals, only state-run newspapers are currently permitted to publish on a daily basis. The government has only recently begun to allow private, entertainment-based TV channels.
