Border officials in China’s Yunnan Province have denied charges that they have turned back refugees fleeing from conflict in northern Burma’s Kachin State. In late June, New York-based Human Rights Watch reported that China forced some refugees to return to the state despite ongoing fighting there between Burmese government forces and the Kachin Independence Army. However, China’s Xinhua news agency quoted local officials as saying that there has been no significant influx of refugees into China since the conflict began more than a year ago.
