NEW YORK—UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres said Monday that geopolitical tensions are “at their highest level this century” as the situation in the Middle East appears to be deteriorating in the wake of a US airstrike that killed a key Iranian commander last week.

Referring to trade and technological conflicts as well as other global concerns such as climate change, Guterres said in a statement, “My message is simple and clear. Stop escalation. Exercise maximum restraint. Restart dialogue. Renew international cooperation.”
