RANGOON — After arriving in Rangoon in 2013, British artist Kate Bowen was drawn to the city’s unique contrast between decaying architectural relics and emerging new buildings, and she soon began capturing city scenes from the roofs of downtown buildings. The former Burma Railways headquarters near Bogyoke Aung San Market has been a source of enduring inspiration, and in the time since she has worked across an alluring range of visual mediums to create portraits of the dilapidated colonial edifice, often evocative of an impressionist aesthetic with an eastern palette.
About 80 paintings revealing the character of the long-abandoned building are now on display at Gallery 65 on Yawmingyi Street as part of the ongoing Yangon Art and Heritage Festival. Bowen’s exhibition will run until Mar. 22 from 10am to 6pm daily, with paintings ranging in price from US$100-$3000.
