WASHINGTON—The US Congress was thrown into chaos on Wednesday as the final process to certify Democrat Joe Biden’s win in the November presidential election was disrupted by supporters of Republican President Donald Trump storming the Capitol building.

The assault, condemned by Biden as an “insurrection”, came after Trump supporters had attended a rally in Washington earlier in the day at which the president repeated his unsubstantiated claims of widespread voter fraud.
