Myanmar resistance drone units targeted the junta air base at Taungoo in Bago Region with improvised rocket bombs and suicide drones on Monday, inflicting casualties and damage, according to the civilian National Unity Government (NUG)’s Defense Ministry.
Operation “Rain of Fire” was conducted by resistance groups jointly commanded by the NUG Defense Ministry and the country’s oldest ethnic armed organization, the Karen National Liberation Army (KNLA), armed wing of the Karen National Union (KNU).
Resistance groups and drone units used 114 mm rocket bombs and several improvised suicide drones to attack the junta’s Taungoo Air Base.
The Shar Htoo Waw’s Kloud Drone Team said its suicide drones and rocket bombs found their target, killing several regime personnel.
The NUG’s Defense Ministry said its attack killed at least five regime soldiers and left others wounded.
The Irrawaddy was unable to independently verify regime casualties.
A video released by the Shaw Htoo Waw shows resistance forces launching several improvised drones into the sky.
The assault follows an attack by Mountain Knights Civilian Defense Force (MKCDF) and other resistance groups, which fired seven 107mm rocket bombs at the air base last Tuesday. Details of casualties and damage from that attack are still unknown.
The military regime uses Taungoo Air base to conduct airstrikes in Bago Region and Karenni, Karen and southern Shan States.
The regime has responded to increasing loss of territory on the ground by escalating its campaign of indiscriminate aerial bombings. According to research group Nyan Lynn Thit Analytica, regime airstrikes have killed at least 1,295 civilians since the 2021 coup.
In early April, Shar Htoo Waw’s Kloud Drone Team was among several resistance groups that attacked junta chief Min Aung Hlaing’s residence, his military headquarters and a major airbase in the regime’s administrative capital of Naypyitaw, using 28 suicide drones.
The regime claimed its air defenses had shot down four drones targeting the airport and three others zeroing in on Zeyar Thiri Township, where its military headquarters is located.
Resistance groups also used an improvised drone to drop bombs on the junta’s major airbase in Naypyitaw in September last year.
