No agreement between the Ta’ang National Liberation Army (TNLA) and Myanmar’s regime was agreed in China, the armed group announced on Wednesday.
The TNLA delegation led by Lieutenant General Tarr Jode Jarr met Lieutenant General Ko Ko Oo, the regime’s Special Operations commander, for talks in Kunming, Yunnan Province, on Sunday.
Junta airstrikes on TNLA territory in Namtu and Kutkai townships and attacks on Nawnghkio Township in northern Shan State continued during the talks.
The TNLA said it proposed a halt in the fighting, allowing civilians on both sides to receive food, clothes and medical supplies.
The armed group was unavailable for further comment and the regime has not issued a statement.
Chinese special envoy Deng Xijun ended the talks due to the complexity of negotiations after suggesting both sides prepare new proposals for a follow-up meeting, the TNLA said.
The TNLA is a member of the Brotherhood Alliance which has taken control over most of northern Shan State since October 2023.
The alliance controls the northern Shan State capital Lashio and vital trade routes with China.
To force the Brotherhood Alliance to hold talks, China blocked border trade, creating hardships for civilians. Beijing pressured the powerful United Wa State Army to implement a “five-cut” strategy against the Myanmar National Democratic Alliance Army (MNDAA) of the Brotherhood Alliance, aimed at denying access to electricity, water, internet, supplies and personnel.
The MNDAA signed a truce with the regime during a China-brokered peace talks in Kunming in January after the group’s leader Peng Daren was reportedly placed under house arrest in Kunming after meeting Deng.
The TNLA has liberated the ruby town Mogoke in northern Mandalay Region and helped resistance forces liberate Singu Township and much of Madaya Township next to Mandalay.
The regime recently conducted airstrikes on civilian targets in towns controlled by the TNLA in northern Shan State and Mogoke town.
Myanmar’s junta has lost most of Rakhine State in western Myanmar to the Arakan Army (AA), another member of the Brotherhood Alliance.
The AA has liberated 14 out of 17 Rakhine State’s townships as well as Paletwa Township in neighboring Chin State and has expanded operations into Magwe, Bago and Ayeyarwady regions.
