Myanmar’s junta delegation led by transport minister General Mya Tun Oo returned from Russia on Monday after attending the International Economic Forum in St Petersburg, according to the regime’s media.
Russia has deepened ties with Myanmar’s military since the 2021 coup, expanding cooperation in the trade and investment sectors. Russian business delegations regularly visit Naypyitaw and junta representatives have attended several Russian economic forums.
Investment and foreign economic relations minister Dr Kan Zaw, commerce minister Tun Ohn, health minister Dr Thet Khine Win and Union of Myanmar Federation of Chamber of Commerce and Industry representatives also left for Russia on June 5.
The delegation held talks with Russia’s macroeconomics minister Sergei Glazyev, Roscongress Foundation president Anton Kobyakov, who organized the event, economic development minister Maksim Reshetnikov, transport adviser Igor Levitin, Russia-ASEAN Business Council chairman Ivan Polyakov and transport minister Roman Starovoyt.
The junta media said talks focused on cooperation in trade, investment, transport, infrastructure development, direct flights, importing cancer drugs and producing the drugs in Myanmar.
No official agreements were signed during the visit.
Gen Mya Tun Oo led a delegation to the Eastern Economic Forum in Vladivostok in September.
The two regimes launched direct flights in September and are discussing direct kyat-ruble payments to lessen the impact of US dollars in transactions.
Russia has approved plans to build nuclear power plants in Myanmar and is interested in investing in a stalled deep-sea port project in Dawei Township, Tanintharyi Region.
