The Ministry of Commerce has raided Quarto Products, a major food and beverage supplier to restaurants in Rangoon, on suspicions that it illegally imported large volumes of wine, The Myanmar Times reports. “We believe that [Quarto] may be the illegal [wine] distributor for the whole local market,” Thein Htun Oo, a director in the ministry’s department of commerce and consumer affairs, was quoted as saying. The raid took place in late October and the firm has been shut down since. Quarto is accused of illegally importing US $620,000 worth of wine. Its director could face a three-year prison sentence.
