The United Wa State Army (UWSA) marked its founding 23 years ago with celebrations held in Mong Pawk Township, Shan State, on Tuesday. Besides a military parade, there were also athletic and cultural events to commemorate the occasion of the UWSA’s formation. “April 17 is the day we revolted against the Communist Party of Burma,” said Sai Khun, a spokesperson for the group, referring to the mutiny against the CPB’s Burman leadership by its ethnic Wa rank and file. The group subsequently signed a ceasefire agreement with the central government that was renewed late last year.
