UN Special Rapporteur to Begin 11-Day Visit for Countrywide Human Rights Assessment

The UN special rapporteur on human rights in Burma will begin an 11-day mission on Sunday to assess the situation in Arakan, Kachin, Shan and Chin states as well as the town of Meikhtila in Mandalay Division, the UN Human Rights Council said in a statement Wednesday. With permission from Burma’s government, Tomás Ojea Quintana will examine efforts to build inter-religious trust in Meikhtila after the violent anti-Muslim riots there in March. During the tour he also plans to visit remaining political prisoners, and he hopes to talk with the government about its response to land disputes and protests.
