The UN special rapporteur to Burma on human rights, Tomas Ojea Quintana, has cancelled plans to visit the Kachin Independence Organization in Laiza, Kachin State, after the government failed to grant permission for the trip, Mizzima reports. Quintana arrived in Myitkyina, the Kachin State capital, on Wednesday, where he met with regional government officials. UN Burma spokesman Aye Win was quoted as saying Quintana’s future travel itinerary was uncertain, given the government’s decision to refuse access to Laiza, site of the rebel group’s official headquarters. Quintana will visit Arakan, Kachin and Mon states on his 11-day trip to assess the country’s human rights situation.
