Two Foreign Reporters Denied Visas for Arakan Coverage
29 August 2013
Two US-based reporters say they have been denied visas to return to Burma because of their coverage of the communal conflict in Arakan State, according to a report by DVB. Matt Rains and Alia Mehboob, who work for the Lux Capio Photography Agency, said that officials at the Burmese embassy in Washington, D.C., told them they would not be issued visas because they had entered restricted Muslim areas of the state during a previous visit. The two were detained by immigration authorities in April after they were prevented from entering a mosque in the Muslim quarter of the Arakan State capital Sittwe by a mob of local Buddhists.
