Turkey has joined the ranks of international governments to welcome Sunday’s Burmese by-elections in which Aung San Suu Kyi’s National League for Democracy won 43 out of the 45 constituencies being contested. A statement released by the Turkish Foreign Ministry on Tuesday said its Burmese Ambassador Murat Yavuz Ateş was also on had to observe the weekend’s vote. It said Turkey considers the release of many political prisoners, holding dialogue with opposition groups and peace talks with ethnic minorities as positive steps on the road to political reform by the Naypyidaw government.
