Thein Sein Vows to Eliminate Forced Labor

In a May Day address published by Burma’s state-run media, President Thein Sein said his government has launched a program to eradicate forced labor by 2015. “Our elected government has been in the office for over a year and it is high time we eliminate all forms of forced labor once and for all, [which] will enhance the eternal principles of justice, liberty, equality in the Union,” wrote the president. According to the Democratic Voice of Burma, labor rights activists also held their first May Day rally since a new Labor Organization Bill was signed into law last year.
