President Thein Sein on Wednesday reiterated an assertion made last month that the country would soon see a nationwide ceasefire signed between Burma’s ethnic armed groups and the government, according to a speech transcript published by state media. In an address made during the swearing-in of Union-level deputy ministers, the president said “the guns have fallen silent” in ethnic armed conflicts that have raged for decades between government troops and 13 rebel armies. The Kachin Independence Army has yet to sign a ceasefire agreement with the government, though a plan to work toward a cessation of hostilities was inked in May.
