Burma President Thein Sein has announced a 140 billion kyat (US$145 million) road repair and building program for Kachin State, the Myanma Freedom Daily reports. On a trip to the northernmost state, the president said Tuesday the program would include the India-funded $120 million upgrade of the Sumprabun-Putao road, the report said. “Putao’s airport’s runway will also be extended by 8,500 feet to allow jets to land there,” it said. “The president said that the government is turning its attention to the development of Kachin State, as it lags far behind most other provinces in Myanmar.”
