Burmese President Thein Sein met with a group of senior statesmen known as “The Elders” in Naypyidaw on Wednesday. The delegation, which includes two Nobel Peace Prize laureates—former US President Jimmy Carter and former Finnish President Marti Ahtisaani—as well as former Norwegian Prime Minister Gro Harlem Brundtland, arrived in Burma on Tuesday for a three-day visit to assess the situation in the country since it began its transition to quasi-civilian rule two years ago. Thein Sein told the visitors that a nationwide peace agreement could soon be reached with Burma’s ethnic armed groups, state media reported.
