Thai authorities have approved a proposal to allow Burmese nationals with border passes obtained at checkpoints in the border town of Mae Sot to travel as far as the northern Thai province of Sukhothai, 200 km away, according to a report by The Bangkok Post. Currently, border pass holders have to remain in the Mae Sot area of Tak Province. Burma’s government made the proposal, and in exchange offered to allow Thai nationals to travel as far as Moulmein on similar passes. The proposal, approved by Tak officials, military officers and Immigration Bureau and Customs Department staff on Wednesday, must be forwarded to Thailand’s Interior Ministry for consideration.
