Tensions are mounting in southern Burma’s Mon State after a number of incidents and one deadly clash occurred between the Burmese military and the New Mon State Party (NMSP) last month, Burma News International reports. NMSP Regional Commander for Tenasserim Division’s Mergui District Maj Han Tha said two Burma Army units had been getting dangerously close to an NMSP camp in Bokpyin Township. “It seems like the units are about to attack our base in Htanphara in a few days. We have deployed our troops around the area. There will be a combat if they raid us,” he told BNI.
