Tens of thousands of people attended the funeral for prominent Burmese activist Win Tin on Wednesday in Rangoon, including members of his National League for Democracy (NLD) party, the 88 Generation Peace and Open Society, ethnic leaders, politicians and other activists. Foreign diplomats including US Ambassador to Burma Derek Mitchell also paid their respects at the ceremony at Yayway cemetery. Win Tin was a founding member of the NLD and one of the country’s most outspoken activists against the Burmese government. He passed away on Monday at the age of 84 while seeking treatment for several health ailments at a hospital in Rangoon.
