Burmese opposition leaders Aung San Suu Kyi will visit Northern Ireland on Thursday as part of her ongoing tour of several European nations. According to the Belfast Telegraph, she is expected to meet with senior officials, schoolchildren and university students during her brief visit, which follows a meeting with Prince Charles in London on Wednesday. Suu Kyi is visiting the region, which had a long history of conflict between Irish nationalists and a UK-controlled government until a peace agreement was reached in 1998, at the invitation of members of the regional Parliament. On Tuesday, she attended a ceremony to receive the EU’s Sakharov Prize for human rights, conferred on her 23 years ago.
