Burmese opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi personally donated 2 million kyat (US $2,270) to flood victims in the Irrawaddy delta township of Pathein during a visit on Saturday. Addressing supporters outside the NLD party headquarters in the town, Suu Kyi said she wanted to encourage and support research into why flooding occurs in the delta region every year and what long-term solutions can be applied. Suu Kyi’s donation will be used for health and educational support, said one local NLD member. Her visit to Pathein comes during an ongoing internal dispute among NLD leaders in the delta township.
