Burma’s state-run news outlets, which would become “public service media” under legislation being considered by Parliament, will soon surpass the country’s private media in terms of quality of content and journalistic ethics, Deputy Information Minister Ye Htut has claimed, according to Myanma Freedom Daily. Citing ongoing efforts to improve the standards of state mouthpieces like the much-lampooned New Light of Myanmar newspaper, Ye Htut said that “There are some strong players in the private media sector, which we will use an example to perform better than they do.” He made the remarks on Wednesday at the end of a three-day international media conference in Rangoon.
