Burma’s Union Parliament Speaker Shwe Mann signed a memorandum of understanding during his April 8-12 visit to Beijing that intends to boost cooperation between Burma’s Parliament and China’s National People’s Congress (NPC), Chinese state-media outlet Xinhua reports. Zhang Dejiang, NPC Standing Committee chairman, suggested to Shwe Mann that Chinese and Burmese legislatives “protect legitimate rights of investors and maintain a sound policy and legal environment for China-Myanmar trade cooperation,” Xinhua reported. Shwe Mann reportedly said Burma “firmly adheres to the one-China policy” and “admires China’s reform and opening-up policy as well as the country’s great achievements in its economic and social development.”
