Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell wants to renew an import ban on Burma to give the US leverage to prompt further reforms in the military-dominated state. McConnell introduced a resolution on Tuesday that would renew sanctions for another year but would accommodate the Obama administration’s waiver of restrictions on investment and financial services announced last month. McConnell said Burma “has made dramatic changes for the better,” but voiced continued concern over ethnic violence and the country’s ties with North Korea.—AP
