The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) announced it will work with the Burma Police Force to hold a four-day seminar in Sittwe, capital of strife-torn Arakan State. Thirty five senior state police
officers will receive training from an ICRC police expert. “Through presentations, videos, case studies and practical exercises, the workshop will focus on the discretionary use of police powers,” the ICRC said “[T]opics covered will include public-order management and riot control, the use of force and firearms, arrest and detention, and search practices.” Police forces in Arakan have been accused of committing widespread human rights abuses against the stateless Rohingya Muslim minority.
