The president of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), Peter Maurer, arrived in Burma on Sunday to meet with President Thein Sein and other officials, according to a report by AFP. In a statement, Maurer called his visit—the first ever by the head of one of the world’s leading humanitarian organizations—“a significant step forward in our dialogue and in strengthening our relationship with the Myanmar authorities.” Burma’s government recently announced that it would allow the ICRC to resume prison visits in the country. Maurer is expected to visit Arakan State during his trip.
