A prison break attempt at Kawthaung Jail in Burma’s Tenasserim Division has left one person dead and seven inmates injured, state-run newspaper The New Light of Myanmar reports. On Friday night, fighting among inmates in the upstairs corridors of the jail escalated and some tried to take advantage of the chaos by breaking through the roof and setting fire to cells. After prison officers fired warning shots the situation was brought under control. The fire killed one person and injured seven. The report did not mention whether or not some inmates managed to escape.
