The Burmese chapter of PEN International has announced plans to monitor local media reports for hate speech over the next three months, reports Eleven Media. The group said that the purpose of the project is to determine how much the media is contributing to conflicts in the country. “Whenever these conflicts occur, the media are among those that have been accused of fueling violence. So it will be better to do a precise research rather than saying the media is making the situation worse,” said PEN Myanmar Chairperson Ma Thida. She added that the group would report on its findings after the project is completed at the end of July.
