Nyan Win, the spokesperson for the opposition National League for Democracy, filed a lawsuit in a Mandalay court on Oct. 1 against two weekly journals that reported he had made false accusations of electoral fraud during by-elections in April. The journals—Messenger and Pyi Myanmar—are being sued for sub judice contempt of court, which makes it illegal to prejudice the outcome of legal proceedings. Nyan Win is currently fighting charges that he made the false allegations. He told The Irrawaddy that the journals reported the charges as fact, even though a verdict has not yet been reached.
