The National League for Democracy (NLD) is planning to conduct an opinion poll, together with ethnic political parties, in order to study the public’s position on amending or replacing Burma’s 2008 Constitution, Eleven Media reports. NLD spokesperson Nyan Win said the poll would “gather the voices of the people. It is not a nationwide campaign. Chairperson Aung San Suu Kyi instructed us to do this to reach out to the grassroots within two months.” The military-drafted Constitution is considered undemocratic and unpopular, as it protects the military’s political powers, prevents Suu Kyi from becoming president and provides limited rights to Burma’s ethnic minorities.
