The National League for Democracy, Burma’s main opposition party, marked the 25th anniversary of its founding with events held in Rangoon, Mandalay and other cities over the weekend. According to a report by Mizzima, the party invited Min Ko Naing and other former student leaders to attend a ceremony at the NLD headquarters in Rangoon, where the party’s chairperson, Aung San Suu Kyi, delivered an address. Meanwhile, in Mandalay, the local chapter of the party launched the Silver Jubilee magazine. The NLD was founded on Sept. 27, 1988, in the wake of a brutal crackdown on pro-democracy protests by the newly formed State Law and Order Restoration Council.
