Japan’s Nippon Foundation has agreed to start providing assistance to areas under the control of the Democratic Karen Buddhist Army (DKBA) following talks with representatives of the group, Mizzima reports. “They will be helping us to get purified water, electricity, health [care] and education, which are essential in our region,” said Col Saw San Aung of the DKBA. He added that the Nippon Foundation approached the DKBA at the suggestion of chief government peace negotiator Aung Min. The Japanese foundation has previously supplied 400 bags of rice to the DKBA, but this is the first time it has offered to undertake development projects in territory controlled by the ethnic armed group.
