A senior government official has said new construction of hotels in Bagan will not be permitted, the German news agency Deutsche Presse-Agentur reports. President’s Office Minister Soe Thein was quoted as citing the need to “keep Bagan as an ancient city,” in explaining the reason for the restriction. The minister added that already existing hotel deals, some of which were inked under Burma’s former military regime, would be honored. The government hopes the site, home to thousands of temples dating back as far as the 9th century, will win designation as a Unesco World Heritage Site. A previous bid for Unesco recognition foundered in the mid-1990s.
