New Bank Notes to Feature Image of Gen Aung San
14 November 2013
The Central Bank will re-issue bank notes with the image of Burma’s independence hero Gen Aung San, state media report. The central bank would “issue bank notes bearing the images of country’s prominent leaders, buildings, landscapes and emblems with the permission of the Union government,” according to The New Light of Myanmar, which cited Khin Saw Oo, vice-governor of the Central Bank. Burma’s bank notes featured the image of the founding father Aung San following the country’s independence from Britain, but his face was removed from the currency after Gen Ne Win came to power in a 1962 military coup.
