State-run firm Myanmar Posts and Telecommunications this week will announce which consortium it will partner with as Burma’s formerly moribund telecoms industry opens up to competition, the Myanmar Times reports. Consortia led by France’s Orange Group, KDDI of Japan and Singapore’s SingTel are vying for the partnership, with an announcement expected on Wednesday. The industry, long monopolized by MPT, is set to expand significantly in the coming years following the awarding of two operating licenses to foreign firms Ooredoo and Telenor in June. The increased competition is expected to bring down prices for SIM cards and expand coverage in Burma, which suffers from the region’s lowest mobile penetration rate.
