Manipur’s Insurgent Problems of Little Interest to Burma: Indian Official
11 November 2013
An Indian home affairs minister says Burma has shown little interest in helping New Delhi combat insurgents based on the two countries’ poorly demarcated border, according to the Sangai Express in Manipur. “We have approached them several times but we did not get any strong response from Myanmar,” the joint secretary of India’s Home Affairs Ministry, Shambhu Singh, was quoted as saying. Northeast India, which shares a border with Burma’s Kachin State, is home to several insurgent groups seeking various degrees of autonomy or outright independence from the central Indian government. In Kachin State, Burma has for decades seen similar separatist sentiment from ethnic Kachin rebels.
