Mandalay University academics claim they are being transferred to other institutions throughout Burma because of their membership of the University Lecturers’ Union, Democratic Voice of Burma reports. The professors said they were being forced to teach at other locations, as education officials disapprove of the union, which the lecturers set up and registered in June. “[Authorities] probably did this with the assumption that sending the leaders of the union away would slow down its momentum,” Union Chairman Thet Naing Oo said. Earlier this year, the government lifted a decades-old ban on the formation of unions in Burma.
