The Chinese authorities have officially announced that displaced Kachin civilians living in two temporary camps in China can stay after initially insisting they must return over the border to war-torn northern Burma. The camps’ inhabitants were allowed to remain after government officials from Ruili visited the area, a member of the Nongdao IDPs Assistance Committee told the Kachin News Group. “After they issued warnings to practice proper hygiene, not make too much noise from riding motorcycles and not get involved with drug trafficking, they went home,” said Nang Bawk, a member of IDPs Assistance Committee.
