A Burmese journalist who organized an unauthorized rally calling for greater press freedom was charged on Saturday with violating Article 18 of the Peaceful Assembly and Peaceful Processions Act, reports DVB. Yae Khe, a correspondent for Mizzima based in Prome, Pegu Division, was taken into custody and later released without bail after he and DVB journalist Min Nyo decided to go ahead with the protest despite being denied permission by local authorities. Around 20 local journalists and 80 media activists joined the rally, which also called for the release of six imprisoned journalists, including DVB video journalist Zaw Pe, who was sentenced earlier this month to one year in prison for “disturbing a civil servant on duty.”
