Burmese football fans reacted violently to their team’s 0 to 1 loss to Indonesia on Monday night. Some disgruntled spectators at the match, held at the Thuwanna Stadium in Rangoon, tore off their clothes and set them on fire, while others destroyed billboards related to the SEA Games, reported China’s Xinhua news agency. Around 2,000 police were deployed to provide security at the event, some of whom were stoned by rioting football supporters. To contain the unrest, all access to the stadium was blocked and telephone lines were also cut, the report added. Burma’s loss means that it has been eliminated from the football competition, which is one of the highlights of the SEA Games. Burma is hosting the games this year for the first time in 44 years.
