Farmers Threaten ‘All Townships’ Protest Over Land Grabs
7 August 2013
Farmers in Irrawaddy Division have threatened an “all townships demonstration” if their grievances over alleged land grabs are not addressed within three months, Mizzima reports. About 30 farmers said at a press conference this week that more than 4,000 of their fellow farmers would mobilize if a pledge to resolve the issue, made by a local official, is not fulfilled. At a meeting on July 15, authorities said the issue would be addressed within three months and land would be returned to rightful claimants. The farmers say about 500 acres has been seized by the military and associated businesses since 1993.
