A conference to discuss the state of ethnic-language media in Burma was held in the Shan State capital of Taunggyi from March 4 to 6, reports the Shan Herald Agency for News, one of the organizers of the event. More than 300 participants, including Shan State Chief Minister Sao Aung Myat, Deputy Minister of Information Pike Htwe, and representatives of various news agencies, political parties and civil society organizations, were in attendance, the report said. While Pike Htwe asserted that censorship had been abolished in Burma, some noted that certain controls still exist, including a requirement that reports for ethnic media be translated into Burmese for the authorities.
