Burma’s Union Election Commission has warned the country’s political parties that they could be deregistered if they accept financial or other assistance from foreign countries, reports Mizzima. In a letter dated Aug. 23, the commission said that such aid is forbidden under Article 407 (c) of the 2008 Constitution. The commission also said that it sought the opinion of all 51 registered political parties operating in Burma prior to sending the letter, and that 16 parties proposed allowing parties to receive foreign aid. Of the rest, 17 said that foreign assistance should be banned in accordance with the Constitution and Political Parties Registration Law, while 18 made no comment on the issue.
