Burma’s Union Election Commission (EC) summoned the leaders of two major Arakanese political parties recently to discuss communal clashes between Buddhists and Muslims in Arakan State. “They told us not to get involved in the current conflicts and to cooperate with the government to resolve the problems,” Pe Than, a lawmaker from the Rakhine Nationalities Development Party, was reported by the Narinjara news agency as saying. Arakan League for Democracy Secretary Myo Kyaw said the EC also warned that “action would be taken” against parties that took part in the violence.
