Efforts to clear land mines in Karen and Karenni states have been slowed because ceasefires are unstable and the government has not yet approved a land mine law, Mizzima news agency reports. A secretary of the Karen National Union says the rebel group has restricted access to mining areas but has not yet started de-mining because “the current ceasefire has no concrete guarantee,” the news agency reported Wednesday. The Karenni National Progressive Party says it spoke with the government about de-mining procedures but could not begin the process until a draft land mine law was approved by President Thein Sein.
